The route of a path should be decided by how the garden is used rather than appearance alone. A path that takes an unnecessarily complicated route may encourage people to continue walking across the lawn, while one that is too narrow can be uncomfortable when carrying shopping, garden equipment or bins.
We consider the position of doors, gates, sheds, patios, bin storage areas and frequently used garden features before planning the layout. Where possible, the path should provide a natural and convenient connection between these points without taking over the garden or disrupting important planting.
Width is another important consideration. A compact path may be suitable for occasional access to a shed, whereas a main entrance path should generally provide more space for visitors and everyday use. Wider sections or passing areas can also be incorporated where appropriate, helping the route feel less restricted.
